Comfort Letter, I Hope He Will Never Read

by admin on October 1, 2013

Two nights ago, I had a horrific dream and that is every parents’ worse nightmare.  I dreamt that I called my son school and they told me that my son school bus never got to school at all.   The whole dream was a catastrophic event where I searched for my oldest son.  I woke up with vivid memories from the horrible dream.

Yesterday afternoon, I received a weekly newsletter from my son teacher via email.  My son is in Kindergarten.  The school is doing a comfort kits for emergency event. The list of items to be put in a gallon Ziploc bag such as: family photo, comfort not form parents, juice pouch, nutritious snack bars, fold up poncho that come in a little pouch, and a pair of socks.

Last night, I could not sleep, tossed and turned until 3 am.  I often don’t think in the emergency stated and the thoughts of writing the notes to my son when he is scared and alone is just too much.  I am not much of the writer and writing it brought tears to my eyes.  I hope that my dearest son never have to open and  read it this letter. He is in Kindergarten and hope that there is an adult can read it to him when such catastrophic event occured.

Here is my letter to him in handwritten on the stationary.

“My Dearest Thor,

Remember when you were 3 years old, Daddy was gone on the golf trip and you stayed home with just mommy and Percy?  Night time, you slept with Percy and mommy on Mommy’s and Daddy’s bed, your favorite bed.  This time Percy was still very little, he has not talked or walked yet.  Mommy woke up in the middle of the night and paralyzed (could not walk or move) but you woke up and retrieved the cell phone to call for help.  You are mommy’s heroes. You were very helpful, calm, brave, and courageous.

Today is a tough day, but it will be over soon.  Dr Seuss said, “Today, you are you, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is youer than you”.   You are my courageous and brave boy and that is you. Mommy, Daddy, and Percy will be with you soon.  We’ll laugh, hug you, and squeeze you so tight. We’ll go on many adventures with you.  We will fly to the sky and go over the mountains and cross over the seas to explore new adventures together.   You are going to have to hold on tight for a bit! We will come for you. If you are still scare and worry a little, Pray to God and trust Him, and He will also be with you.

I am with you. Next to you, hugging you so tight, rubbing your back, and kissing you.  You may not see me next to you right now, but I am with you. Remember your kissing hands from mommy?  Honey, place your hands close to your heart and close your eyes, think of me, I am there close to your heart, just a kiss away.  Don’t be scared because I am with you in your thoughts and heart. Just in case you like another kiss,  here is my big kiss to you on the bottom of this letter in pretty red lipstick color that you like best on mommy. I love you very much.

My loving Thor, be a brave boy until we see you. Listen to your teachers and be kind and stay safe. We love you more anything in this world. See you soon, my dearest brave Thor.

Mommy, Daddy, and Percy”

Both of my sons love, The Kissing Hands by Audrey Penn.  The story is about a little raccoon who is afraid of the first day of school. His mom kisses his palm, and he feels the kiss “rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart.” Whenever he gets lonely, she advises, he is to press his hand to his cheek and “that very kiss will jump to your face and fill you with toasty warm thoughts.”  I kissed both of their palms and reassured them that I will always with them and will always come for them.
